I am enjoying my fourth "career" at present, serving the community as a County Councillor and as a NED of a national mutual, as well as running my own business services consultancy, A safe pair of hands Limited. This aims to support CEO's, COO's and Directors by gaining consensus and commitment to key business activities through strategic planning events both with their people and their clients.
I built up my experience in strategic planning facilitation skills over 1500+ workshops in the last 8 years of my time with BT, British Telecommunications plc, top Government and Corporate customers in UK, Europe and USA. I also successfully led an "Investor in People" campaign, which included the development of Balanced Business Scorecards.
From leaving school, I joined up and eventually became a regular army officer for 10 years, during which time I saw active service in Borneo and then went to St Edmund Hall, Oxford University, graduating with Masters. In September 1973 I embarked on my second career with a City wine merchant. After 8 years I moved my family to Pomerol, France, near Bordeaux, where I ran my own wine brokerage firm. It was a great business experience with highs such as introducing Robert Parker Jr to a number Pomerol and St Emilion wines 'en primeur' and lows like the frost of 1984. During these five years, I, with an amazing American business partner, 'pioneered' electronic trading of wine on Minitel. - the beginning of my third career.
I am a Pension Plan Trustee and Committee of Management member - the equivalent a Non Executive Director (NED) of Benenden Healthcare Society Ltd., - a NFPO Friendly Society of some one million members paying 1.10 a week for back up to NHS services on a mutual basis. I was elected a West Sussex County Councillor in May 2005
I am an active Church Warden and Deanery Synod Lay Chairman in West Sussex where I live with my family of five.
A member of Harlequins FC since joining the Army, I am addicted to, but not proficient at, golf.
